Profile


North Guwahati is a glorious historical place of North Eastern Region -India, situated on the North Bank of the mighty Brahmaputra river in Kamrup district,Assam. North Gauhati College was established in 1962 in the name of its location. The Department of History was also started on the day of inception of the College. This is one of the most important department of the college as North Guwahati is full of historical events from the rule of the ancient Kamrupa Kingdom. During the Ahom rule, the Battle of Saraighat, considered to be one of the most notable event in the history of Assam, took place at this location. North Guwahati was also a temporary capital of the greatest king of Ahom Monarchy, Swargadeo Rudra Singha . He made a plan to attack the Mughal invader who were occupying large parts of the state and to send them out of the state. For this purpose, he temporally shifted his capital to North Guwahati and raised an army force. Unfortunately, the great king Rudra Singha died in this place before starting the war.
The different temples, tanks and other historic structures are located at North Guwahati like Auniati Satra, Ashwaklanta Devalaya, Doul Gouvinda Temple, Dighreswari Temple, Manikarneswar Temple, Rudrswar temple, Rock inscription at Kanai Barasi Boasil, Rangmahal Tank etc. bear the testimony of historic holly places here.
The historical survey undertaken by the department in the last several years, has contributed a lot to the importance of North Guwahati and its surrounding. The major objectives of the Department are:
a. The outmost objective is to fulfill the courses of the syllabus prescribed by Gauhati University providing best of the knowledge and resource materials.
b. To enable the students to understand the concept, scope and ideals of the subject of history.
c. To enable the students to understand the major trends of changes and developments in the life and culture of the humanity.
d. To enable the students to understand the current national and international affairs & events from a historical perspective.
e. To help the students to develop a sense of responsibility both as a member of the family as well as community at large.
f. To encourage the students to participate in the state and national level competitive exams.
