ENGLISH ABOUT THE COLLEGE
North Gauhati College, established in 1962 by a group of local educated youths, holds a significant place in the educational landscape of the region. Situated in a rural area, the college was founded with the noble aim of providing quality education to the local community. Over the years, it has played a pivotal role in empowering and enlightening generations of students from the surrounding areas.
The humble beginnings and grassroot origins of the college reflect its deep-rooted commitment to serving the educational needs of the local population. Since its inception, North Gauhati College has been dedicated to fostering academic excellence, promoting cultural values, and nurturing talent among students hailing from diverse socio-economic backgrounds.
ABOUT THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT
The English department of the College was born with the college itself in 1962. Apart from teaching in the Higher Secondary and Degree classes, the department started offering Honours courses since 1996. Seminars, workshops, movie shows and reviews, educational trips, talks etc. are held regularly for the benefit of the students. As outreach programmes, the department also offers help in academic matters to the neighbouring vernacular medium schools. With the importance of English, especially Communicative English growing day by day, emphasis has been laid on equipping the students with the required skill to communicate in English. The library and a UGC granted Language Laboratory of the department caters well to the needs of the students. The students and teachers of the department contribute regularly to the departmental wall magazine Arora, where vibrant discussions and analysis of recent development and trends in the field of literature, criticism, language and art is held.
THE PRESENT FACULTY MEMBERS
Presently the department has four sanctioned posts. Headship is offered by means of rotation as norms set by Govt, of Assam. Dr. Shikha Kashyap, an Associate Professor joined the department on 01-08-96 and her area of specialization is in Indian English Writing. Besides writing articles and presenting in National and International Conferences, she is also a Doctoral Thesis Referee under R.T.M. University, Nagpur. Dr. Maloshi Choudhury, who is former Head of the Department and an Associate Professor. She joined the department in 28-07-2000 and pursued her Ph.D, in the field of English Language Teaching. She has contributed by writing books, articles and has presented papers in National and International Conferences. The present Head of the Department, Dr. Jewelina Choudhury, an Associate Professor joined North Gauhati College on 28-09-22 as a Lecturer. Her area of specialization is in Indian English Writing, and she has also contributed by writing articles in renowned journal and has presented her papers in seminars and conferences. Ms, Devastuti Sharma joined the department on 30-08-16 as an Asst. Professor and is pursuing her Ph.D in the area of Retellings of William Shakespeare. She focuses her writings on gender and sexuality.

The mission of the department is to provide high-quality education in English language and literature to students from diverse backgrounds, with a focus on promoting literacy, critical thinking, and communication skills. The department aims to empower students to effectively express themselves, engage with various forms of literature, and navigate the complexities of the English language.
The vision of the department is to create a nurturing and inclusive learning environment that fosters a love for reading, writing, and learning in English. The department aspires to inspire students to become lifelong learners who appreciate the power of language and literature in shaping their personal and professional growth. Additionally, the department strives to bridge the gap between rural and urban educational opportunities by providing access to high-quality English education and preparing students for academic and career success in a globalized world.

Research works:
MRP: Completed a UGC granted Minor Research Project titled “Domesticity and the female self: A study in Shashi Deshpande’s selected novels”. The amount sanctioned for this project was Rs. 2 Lakhs 80 thousand’ 2015-2017
PhD: Completed PhD on “Domesticity in Shashi Deshpande’s novels” from Assam University, Silchar in the year 2018 under the supervision of Prof. Sivasish Biswas, ProVC, AUDC.
Certificate of Appreciation: Received certificate of appreciation on 30th November,2024 for successfully serving as Program coordinator for the Leadership Development course conducted from 12 June to 28 June 2024, in collaboration with UMA Global.Inc., New York and North Gauhati College.
