The Department of Economics is one of the oldest departments of North Gauhati College which has been offering quality education in the domain of basic Economic discipline as well as general socio-economic and politico-economic dynamics. The history of the department is as old as the history of the College and therefore it has been a great witness to the statics and dynamics of the College for this long journey through time. Over the years, the department of economics has grown with the growth of this great institution and has taken a definite shape of maturity. Though the path of progression has not always been a smooth and continuous one, it’s been able to carve a niche of its own in matters of teaching, research and social outreach. Economics as a subject for both honors (major) and pass (general) had been very much in demand since the very beginning. There was a time when an arts degree without economics had been considered like a body without a soul. The popularity of this subject has not diminished even now. The growing sophistication of modern techniques has only made the subject more attractive. But there are problems. There are hurdles. There are also bottlenecks of various types. But the department of economics is striving hard not to miss the bus amidst the discerning noise arising out of the demand-supply mismatch of the changing time. We tend to see possibilities amidst those problems and try to overcome the physical and infrastructural shortcomings by way of a concerted effort of all our teachers and students and by doing things as per our departmental plan-programs. This way we have handled a number of difficulties in the past and are determined to carry forward our mission for all the years to come. As the college has already crossed its Platinum Jubilee, we too have geared up to stand up to the occasion with new vigor and responsibility.
In the initial stage, the Department was served by three very dedicated and sincere teachers namely, Prof. Bhava Kanta Sarma, Prof Bhairav Ch. Sarma and Prof. Poresh Ch. Bora. They were the founder teachers of the Department who had rendered their invaluable service with missionary zeal in those very early years of its existence. They were the guiding lights of the department and were very much instrumental in taking the department to newer heights. A few years later, Prof (Mrs.) Meera Barooah had joined the department who had ably guided the department in meeting the goals set forth. All these teachers have now retired, but their pioneering efforts and visionary deeds have continued to inspire the next generation of teachers and students.
Vision and Mission:
The department of economics has a clear vision of a widening horizon which is dotted with brisk economic activities and opportunities for the present and for many more years to come. Here, we are focused to create the manpower equipped with the necessary skills and expertise. We are also determined to keep pace with the changing needs of time for the up gradation of knowledge and skill and to apply, wherever possible, for the betterment of socio-economic conditions. Our task is to generate the required aptitude and strength for our students so that they may enter those fields with conviction and sustain themselves in the face of growing competition.
