The pre-university level course in Geography was introduced in the year 1969 in the same year when the North Gauhati College came under deficit grant–in–aid system. Sri Paramananda Kalita, an academician par excellence was the founder Head of the Department. The Department is well equipped with modern and sophisticated laboratory devices like GPS, stereoscope, satellite imageries, aerial photographs etc. and a computer laboratory with Arc GIS software. The Automatic Weather Station (established by ASTEC under ISRO) which is located at the college premises is run by one of the faculties of the department. There is a provision for collection of climatic data of North Guwahati from AWS for academic and research purposes. The wall magazine of the department Giripath deliberates on concerns relevant to recent times. The students of the department get chances to visit different places across India for the purpose of field study. The Department has the credit of getting funds for two major Research Projects from ICSSR.
